An “amusement park” is a collection of rides and attractions, more extensive than a park or playground. A “theme park” is an amusement park designed following one or more themes, such as the Wild West, wild animal safari or science fiction. Many bed and breakfasts in destination locations have theme parks close by.
Since the 1980s, the amusement parks have become larger than ever before, with everything from giant worldwide theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios, to smaller and medium-sized theme parks like the Six Flags parks and countless smaller venues like Knott’s Berry Farm, Busch Gardens and King’s Dominion around the U.S. and in countries around the world. Family fun parks starting as miniature golf courses have begun to grow to include batting cages, go-karts, bumper cars, bumper boats and water slides. Simpler theme parks aimed at younger children have evolved, like Legoland, and parks like San Diego’s Wild Animal Park redefine zoological gardens to include monorail safaris and handfeeding live giraffes. Amusement parks in shopping malls, like Minnesota’s 4.2 million square foot Mall of America, began in the 1990s, bringing traditional amusement parks indoors and adding hotels, movie theaters, and shopping.
