Topeka began as Native American farm country due to the rich deposits fed from the Kansas river. Later, Topeka acted... » show more as an original bed and breakfast town hosting pioneers heading out west on the Oregon trail. One of the most famous sites for the bed and breakfast visitor is the Brown v. Board of Education Museum, which is located in the Monroe school. Two other historical sites of interest to the bed and breakfast visitor are the Kansas Museum of History and Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site. The former includes exhibits highlighting the history of Kansas as well as Topeka, and the latter provides the bed and breakfast history buff a chance to step back in time with hosts attired in period dress, the original Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad depot, and a turn of the century town. Bed and breakfasts and the arts go hand in hand and Topeka fulfills that need. After a day on your feet at the historic sites (and a nice rest at your bed and breakfast) you may want to take a seat and enjoy any number of plays presented at either the Helen Hocker Theater or the Topeka Civic Theatre. These theaters have recently seen such performances as Rent and Fiddler on the Roof. The possibilities are endless for a bed and breakfast vacation in Topeka. « show less
